Vietnam

Most people’s first contact to Vietnam is through a negative image because Hollywood movies depicting the Vietnam War. Nothing could be further from the truth and Vietnam has completely transformed itself into a Mecca for tourists and travelers. From the awe-inspiring landscapes of Ha Long Bay, the country’s beautiful beaches and to the Mekong Delta there is immense diversity that caters to every-one's taste.

Due to its proximity to China, Vietnam was under control by its northern neighbor for many centuries and retains many Chinese customs and traditions. Subsequently, Vietnam became part of French Indochina, along with Laos and Cambodia and won its independence in 1953. Despite the support by US troops, Vietnam fell under communist rule and remains a strange mix of socialism and communism ever since with an ever increasing capitalist economy.

Nowadays, Vietnam is better know for its natural beauty, especially such as the northern highlands of Sapa, the limestone karsts of Halong Bay, and the immense Mekong Delta in the South. Quaint towns with historical significance include Hoi An which as a ancient trading post retains strong Chinese influences. The ancient capital of Hue is where tombs, beautiful citadels and pagodas are located.
